hesitating 2.1

As we discussed on the list, I am trying to resolve the hesitation in our 2.1. Currently following two leads, Zoltan recommended to clean the distributor cap, Ken questioned my AFM. The distributor cap I just cleaned, but the arm looks kind of fried to my untrained eyes (see pic) in the other picture you can see that the upper right contact in the cap misses the little insulation bit on top... I guess I hould exchange arm and cap?

USA 4 - Oregon, on the Ranch

It was a long hot drive up from SF to Kerby, Oregon. Hot especially because the operation of our van was holding back some secrets. As we were leaving the Bay area and heading inland, it was getting hotter and hotter. really hot. we had all fans running at max, but our van does not have ac. when we stopped for lunch at a potbelly burger place, it didnt seem to be too hot outside, maybe in the upper 80's (F). But we drove on, boiling in our van. We were happy the engine temeperrature stayed coolin these conditions. At one point I reached with my hand in the back of the van only to realize it was far hotter in the back! We were sure something had to be burning back there so we stopped immediately. After some searching we found the problem: the rear fan was heating full power. it seems thats the way vanagons are built, you cannot set it to cold. That was a pretty uncomfortable way to figure out, we were boiling all day.
The remaining way to Kerby was quick and cool, we arrived on the ranch. Jessicas parents were still in Spain so for the first wek or so we were alone. We repaired the speedboat, and by mid-july we could go waterskiing for the first time (after Jess and me did our boat driver exams)!
Oh yes and we also acquired a Dragon Master, a two person towable for behind the speed boat. Thats a pretty wild ride, especially as the boat has twice a smuch power than our van....
In the following week we spent 3 days out skiing with Jessicas family. Let me upload some pictures.

USA 3

Wll after these stops we chilled a few days in San Francisco. We camped in a little state park above Berkeley and visited Jessicas prospective school as well as downtown. For the july 4 weekend we headed north to oregon to avoid the crowds camping.

USA 2

Hello,

so yes we where travelling up the coast in california. highway 1 is beautiful, though a little crowded. for hundreds of miles it is winding along the coastal cliffs, all in protected park land. It was hard to get camping spots here, they are limited and fill up by noon.
Our first stop after that was pismo beach, a very weird place. its a state beach but for $5 you are allowed to drive your vehicle on beach and dunes. so everyone brings his pimped ride and off they goooooooo.
Further up the coast we stopped in Monterey for the famous Aquarium, its really great. I will post some pictures.

USA 1

hello,

sorry it took me such a long while to write the first post. we flew to the states on june 23 and are happy ever since:-)
the air india flight was pretty amusing. when i arrived in frankfurt (jessica had to take a later connecting flight from duesseldorf) and wanted to check in, i was told our plane was still in bombay, and it was unsure when and if it would take off. so the expected delay was five to eleven hours.
well after checkin we requested some drink and food vouchers and got them - worth 24 euro per person - we thought. we decided to go to mcDonalds first and ordered after checking with them they accept vouchers. the food was prepared (we were really hungry) but when they saw the vouchers were issued by air india, they snapped the food right back and away from us, saying air india would never pay their bills. hmmmmmm. we started wondering if an airline that cannot pay their food bills can pay their mechanics.
In the end it worke out in our favor, however: upon complaining with air india they sent us to a nice rooftop biergarten with pizzas available where we spent the next hours and where our voiuchers were gladly accepted.
we finally took off with a six hour delay, had emergency row seats and nothing else to complain about. upon arrival in Los Angeles we took the SuperShuttle to the gated community where our van was awaiting us. it was after 1AM when we finally made it there.
The next morning we left after chatting with Mark (the Pfohl-family friend who stored the van for us) and headed north along the coast. The van seems to be running great. And a poptop roof is simply great. It sets up in a few seconds!
For the next days we traveled north on Highway 1 along the windy California coast.
